After a road trip through the Tablelands we arrived back in Cairns.

The picturesque mountain village of Kuranda is just 30km northwest of Cairns and is surrounded by World Heritage Rainforest. Visitors can pay a small fortune and travel to Kuranda on Kuranda’s Historic Scenic Railway or over the rainforest on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Or waste the money somewhere else and drive by car via the "spectacular Kuranda Range Road". (Don't forget the sick bags, the road is very winding.)
As stated on the official website: "Kuranda has come a long way from its initial origins as a centre for those choosing an alternative lifestyle in the late 60’s." Which is a nice way to say that it is no longer a Hippie Village but has been fully hit by commercialism! "Historic Buildings from the villages past now house a variety of upmarket restaurants, cafes and bars." (Not to mention that it has hundreds of shops on top of two markets.) Nevertheless it is a very pretty little village and we enjoyed our visit very much.

The skeleton of an Allosaurus, found in the area. (The bottom half is on the lower ground floor of the Fossil and Germstone Museum.)
Inside the aviary of the Butterfly Sanctuary (the largest butterfly flight aviary and exhibit in Australia). All their butterflies are local species.
A Carins Birdwing
The elusive and iconic Ulysses Butterfly. With it's electric blue colour one of the most eye catching butterflies I have ever seen. It's survival tactic in the wild is to be extremely fast! Try shooting a photo of one and you will know what I mean. Only got this one because it was sitting on a feeding station.
